Job Description


Position Summary: Performs blood procurement from all age groups, understanding specimen preparation and handling. The position requires the performance of a variety of non-technical and clerical duties in the laboratory.

Position Qualifications:
1. High School diploma or equivalent
2. Vocational / Technical education
3. MA – Phlebotomist Certified
4. 7 hours AIDS education
5. AHA Healthcare BLS

Essential Job Functions*:
1. Performs venipunctures professionally and with skill at various sites (antecubital, wrist, hand, and foot). Capillary puncture (finger, neonate, and heel). Completely explains to the patient the procedure about to be performed when possible. Rarely missing a vein on any patient with minimal trauma. Follow the two (2) stick policy, documents patient education. Recognizes the patient’s age/cultural needs as a relevant factor and applying appropriate critical thinking and decision-making skills.
2. Ensures draws are collected in a timely manner. Checks all workload pending lists periodically for specimen accountability. Checks previous orders to combine procedures if possible to minimize the number of venipunctures per patient. Delivers specimens to the appropriate Laboratory department to facilitate STAT and timed testing.
3. Accurately labels patient samples following hospital policy with patient’s name and date of birth; date, time, initials, on specimen requisitions Specimens that require analyses by a reference laboratory are properly labeled, aliquoted and stored at the appropriate temperature and are ready for pick up by the courier.
4. Performs all data entry of patient’s demographics and testing requests with minimal instances of error. Performs clerical duties including operating computer, answering phones, filing reports and logging specimens. Assists in the training and orientation of new personnel.
5. Recognizes and immediately reports any computer malfunction, instrumentation problem and low inventory levels to supervisory personnel.
6. Yearly competencies are completed and on file in the Laboratory. Meets in-service requirements including mandatory education. Is responsible for information delivered at department staff meetings.
7. Continually uses time to department advantage and performs well in emergency situations. Uses the occurrence reports to document errors which may affect patient care. Supports department QA studies by collecting statistics, troubleshooting for process improvement.
8. Collects employee health specimens and pre-employment Urine drug screens.
