Job Description

Position Summary: The Medical Assistant is responsible for front office duties, including greeting patients, initiating clinic encounter, managing patient’s appointments, scheduling, and medical records. The MA is responsible to the clinical director in the course of patient care. Acts as support person for all clinical needs of the practitioner as it relates to patient care, ancillary services, laboratory and diagnostic testing, as well as routing and preparation of patient laboratory specimens, maintenance / accountability of laboratory equipment, OSHA required standards of the clinical operations or back office procedures, patient education, pharmacy refills, laboratory / diagnostic result interpretation and patient follow-up, and medical / legal chart documentation and maintenance and cardiovascular life support as required.

Job Requirements

Position Qualifications:
1. Ability to meet minimum hospital hiring standards.
2. High school or GED equivalent education.
3. Completion of an Accredited Medical Assistant program.
4. Current BLS card.
5. Certified MA

Essential Job Functions*:
1. Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing. Communicates with staff and patients in a professional, polite and courteous manner. Gathers data and documents observations clearly, legibly, and in a timely manner. Documents / communicates interventions in the patient’s chart and with the practitioner.
2. Assists in the planning of patient care in collaboration with the practitioner, patient, and patient’s family / significant other. Explains and prepares patient for exam / procedures. Provides patient / family with education as indicated / instructed regarding disease / medical conditions, prescriptions, medications, lab and diagnostic test and results as requested by practitioner.
3. Maintains clean and neat workstations and clinical areas such as nurses’ station and exam rooms, stocked with appropriate supplies in order to complete any type of transaction in an efficient manner. Sterilizes equipment, maintains diagnostic equipment according to policy and procedure.
4. Maintains security and confidentiality of patient’s records / charts / reports. Verifies patient information with patient and/or guardian. Verifies insurance coverage, copies or obtains proof of insurance. Enters new patient information into computer.
5. Records vital signs of the patient to help the doctor with diagnosis. Assistants will also prepare patients for examination and give them before and after instructions. Collecting samples like blood, urine, etc., and sending them for laboratory investigation is a part of the certified medical assistant duties.
6. Administers medications and/or treatments as directed and as qualified. Assists and/or conducts appropriate diagnostic tests per practitioner’s orders. Documents in patient chart. Collects various laboratory specimens. Practices universal precautions at all times when handling specimens.
7. Requests patient and/or guardian to sign encounter form. Interviews patient / guardian to insure satisfaction with encounter /visit. If patient perception is not positive, ensures that provider is informed immediately.
8. As the first point of contact for patients in hospital or clinic settings, they will take the patient’s medical history, and information pertaining to the patients visit to the doctor. This information may include signs and symptoms of the ailments or disease affecting the patient.
