Job Description

Position Summary: The OR SCRUB TECH assumes responsibility picking all instruments and supplies for the next day’s scheduled surgical procedures and current day add-on procedures and for ensuring the timely and accurate preparation and delivery of instruments, supplies and equipment to each operating room on the day of surgery to facilitate rapid operating room turnover. Responsible for preference card maintenance in Meditech to include streamlining card contents for efficiency and for the timely entry of corrections/changes by clinical staff.

Job Requirements

Position Qualifications:
1. Ability to meet minimum hospital hiring standards
2. Vocational/Technical Diploma or Completion Certificate
3. AHA Healthcare BLS
4. WA Surgical Technologist Registration
5. AST Surgical Technologist certification within 3 months of hire

Essential Job Functions*:

1. Using preference card and working independently, able to identify and accurately select supplies, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures.
2. Picks cases accurately according to preference card for the next day’s cases, and for current-day add-on cases.
3. Has an understanding of surgical procedures and the required knowledge and reasoning that allows him/her to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team.
4. Delivers instruments, supplies and equipment for timely preparation of the operating room. Actively participates in OR turnover activities as time allows.
5. Follows aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies.
6. Performs routine checks of equipment (ensures CO2 tanks are in the ‘green’, equipment is calibrating and operating correctly, printer paper is stocked for photos, etc.). Promptly reports any malfunction or needed repairs to the OR Charge and/or CS Supervisor.
7. Maintains an orderly work environment, returning unused supplies, instruments and equipment to proper location post-procedure. Ensures equipment storage areas are tidy and organized. Assists and supports inventory control of all supplies equipment, instruments, and implants.
8. Maintains preference cards in Meditech to include streamlining card contents for efficiency and for the timely entry of corrections/changes by clinical staff.
9. Ensures the department is in compliance with recommended practices (AORN, AAMI, JCAHO) and follows department policies.
